Singing is For Everyone: Technologies of Liberation

Teacher(s):
Eli Conley

We invited Eli to join us in Rooted to explore our voice through song. Singing is something inherent to our lives as human beings, but for important reasons (many related to trauma & oppression), we haven’t had full access to our own voice and its free-flow expression. You may know this already, but the act of singing is a fully somatic experience, involving the entire body and tickling the vagus nerve. Let’s play with this technology of liberation together. Workshop Description:Your voice is your own unique instrument. There is no one else who sounds just like you! Yet we often get the message that only “good singers” should sing and everyone else should just listen. In fact, singing is for everyone, and it can bring you great joy! In this workshop we'll explore the messages we've gotten about our voices and reconnect with our innate ability to sing. We’ll approach singing as an embodied practice, connecting with breath and vibration from a place of curiosity. We will use vocal exercises to get to know the different parts of our voices and the many different kinds of sounds we can make. We’ll play musical games and sing healing songs together as a group, literally vibrating in unison even across great distance. Beginners are very welcome!Eli’s BioEli Conley is a singer-songwriter, social justice activist, and teaching artist based in Sacramento, CA who performs and teaches around the US.
